Poster and T-Shirt concept for Uncle Lucius

Had a blast doing this one. It took a lot longer than I thought but I am happy I invested the time into it. Met up with the Uncle Lucius crew when they were in town this fall and we got to talking about poster ideas.

I thought a dream catcher, from native american lore would be really cool — with paintings of the band within the feathers. I listened to “keep the wolves at bay” off their latest record a lot while I did this. I am not one to get a whole lot into hidden meaning or long “artist statement” type stuff but the point is the dreamcatcher traditionally is meant to be displayed in ones home to filter out bad dreams. The catcher “catches” the bad dreams and only the good dreams drip down thought the feathers. The bad dreams here represented by the oil refinery sort of exploding in the center and the three wolves at the top of the image. The good dreams (the band) drip down from the feathers.

I had the very awesome opportunity to work on a concept illustration for Fifth on the Floor’s upcoming release produced by Shooter Jennings. Its coming out in March and is a must have for anyone who likes rock and roll with a touch of country.

I keep working this one out. Hank Williams, vs a serpent. Honky Tonk, vs Injustice. This one is a bit more “cartoon” or Old Timey illustration… but I rather like it. Im working my way up to a full on in your face super awesome painting on this theme. Have a few more studies to do before I am ready for that I think.

Anyhow, I like this one a lot. Ile keep posting the studies as I move along. I have a few commission pieces in the hopper, so the comic and the Honky Tonk Studies are on hold for a bit. Ile be hard at work in the studio over the next few days. I may or may not come up for air.

Honky Tonk, VS Injustice, and finding time for comics

Working on a study for a painting — not thrilled with the pose here so I worked out a different one but the point is, Hank Williams Sr. vs. the iconic Serpent of Injustice. I think its a pretty cool idea, thought up likely in a smokey bar room basement over pints of Michigan style IPA and shots of Jack Daniels. At some point a dear friend told me I should paint Hank Williams fighting a serpent on the head of his white acoustic guitar, so I did. I fancy thats how it went down any way.

Sorry for the backup in new comic panels. The cintiq has opened a world of painting again to me and I have been focussed on some of that work. Dont fear, new panels will be coming out soon and the story will continue but I have some real promising work ahead of me on the illustration front. The focus is going to be with that going forward, but the comics will survive. Thanks for hanging in there

My initial sketch of Jerry Garcia, trying to block in colors and get some values established. I found a few photos and had them up on my other monitor as reference.

So, I took my recent “quick digital drawing of three things” fiverr gig a little out of control

yesterday. As you may or may not know I am running a limited time only gig over at fiverr where I will draw a web resolution image if you give me 3 things (see twitter challenge entry’s). Looking for 1. A person (historical figure) 2. An object, and 3. An adjetive.

Anyway, I was given “Jerry Garcia, Guitar, and Inspirational” as the paramaters. I

Here is most of the colors blocked in and most of all the details in the face

created a quick sketch, and started blocking in colors…and then I just didn’t stop. The line drawing looked good and all but I just kept going. Note, I dont normally put this much into the fiverr gig …the point of the gig is to do some illustrations as “sketches” or concepts or whatever, that I normally would not think to do – all the time giving the requestor something cool.

I hope you enjoy some of the photos of the progression to show how I work. I normally dont post the stages of stuff so let me know if you enjoy this or would rather just see me get to the point! Took most of the afternoon and went back to it in the evening to put final tweaks on.

I really enjoyed this one. I think I am going to do more of a music series sort of thing. Next up to bat, Hank Williams. (sr).

EVS Chapter One

Well, hello everyone. Tonights comic update is a unique one. Consider everything to now the prologue of what EVS, Bo, and the crew are going to be up to moving forward. Ironically perhaps this is likely the last update that was drawn, colored, and pretty much crafted begin to end on the iPad –and yet this is the beginning of our story of life out on the Art Ranch.

Enjoy – Im looking forward to Chapter one kicking off shortly. Stylistically will be a BIT different but the mood / theme etch will be the same. Just BETTER.
